Just two comments:
1) unless your organization gets liberal discounts from scientific supply
houses you ARE going to pay top prices. Almost all mid-to large cities
have bottle distributors who have far larger assortments that the supply
houses. Often, if you buy in larger than case lots, they are less
expensive.
2) as to methods, styles, and tops I suggest review of the information
under Curation and Management of Biological Collections (Ichthyology and
Herpetology) on the Biodiversity and Biological Collections Gopher (you can
search under bottles or tops, etc) at muse.bio.cornell.edu
