                         THE INTERNET:


            B I O L I N E   P U B L I C A T I O N S

  ONLINE PUBLICATION AND DELIVERY OF FULL TEXT AND GRAPHICS

                FOR THE BIOSCIENCE COMMUNITY


Journals, Newsletters and Technical Reports are the life blood
of the scientist and technologist. They are mainly available as
printed publications. However, commercial journals are often
costly; newsletters and documents are commonly distributed only
to a small group of individuals. The information is not reaching
many that need it.

BIOLINE PUBLICATIONS has been set up to help make this
information more easily available online to the vast community
of potential 'readers' - scientists in universities, institutes
and industry, government and regulatory people - linked to the
Internet.

Focusing on the biosciences (biotechnology, biodiversity,
biopolicy, bioinformatics), online access provides the following
advantages:

  *  information is available much more cheaply
  *  information is often available more quickly (without delays
     of printing or distribution)
  *  information is available at the bench/office at any time
  *  a large amount of 'bio-information' can be combined and
     searched for material relevant only to the reader's
     particular interests.

BIOLINE PUBLICATIONS is collaborating with the Tropical Data Base
in Brazil, and working closely with publishers of Journals and
Newsletters, and authors of papers and reports worldwide who wish
to cooperate in this venture.

  OUR COLLECTIVE AIM IS TO MAKE SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION AVAILABLE
        MORE EASILY AND AT LOWER COST THAN AT PRESENT.

Using the Internet network, 'readers' may browse and search
without cost through large quantities of abstracts, summaries and
contents lists, using simple menus, or keywords and phrases to
search across the whole system. Bioline Publications uses state
of the art, easy to use gopher software of growing application
throughout the world's scientific community. Full text and
associated graphics of material of interest can be ordered online
and e-mailed to the reader's computer.

Links are made direct from Bioline Publications' main menu to
other bibliographic information on the Internet. Selecting a menu
item connects users directly to the site of choice. Public domain
and shareware software that may be of help in using Bioline
Publications is available for retrieval direct from the main
menu. Usage and searching instructions are available online.

Access to Journal abstracts, report summaries and contents lists
is available free to all; readers must subscribe to Bioline
Publications in order to receive the full text/graphics of
documents of interest. Additional registration with the
publishers of commercial journals is necessary if full text and
graphics of scientific papers are required. Information on
registration is available from the main menu of Bioline
Publications. The cost of commercial journals is considerably
less than the printed version.

To access Bioline Publications using gopher choose the Bioline
Publications option from the menu of the Base de Dados Tropical
at bdt.ftpt.br (IP address 192.207.195.1), in Campinas, Brasil.
All information and instructions for use are available online
from the main menu. Contact Bioline Publications for further
access information.

The system starts up with a group of Journals (Biotechnology
Letters, Biotechnology Techniques, Binary, Biopolicy
International, Biotechnology and Development Monitor), a number
of Newsletters, reports (including conference reports,
Biodiversity Convention, EEC Directives, US Guidelines, culture
collection information, shipping regulations). A futher four
Journals (Biocontrol Science and Technology, Food and Agriculture
Immunology, Nanobiology, The Genetic Engineer and
Biotechnologist), additional Reports and Newsletters will be
available within a few weeks; more will be added as the system
grows, adding value for the user.

Bioline Publications welcomes requests from publishers, editors,
authors and conference organisers interested in using the system
for wider distribution of material of interest to the
bioscientist. No charge is made for this, at present. It also
welcomes comments from the Internet community and suggestions for
improvement.
