Hey folks,

This is the second notice for this position on TAXACOM. Believe it or not,
I've had no response from my first posting. I can't believe there are not
people out there looking for this sort of opportunity. Please help me out by
posting the information provided below on your institution's jobs board and
getting the word out to possible candidates.

Thanks much

Steve Boyd

RANCHO SANTA ANA BOTANIC GARDEN

POSITION AVAILABLE - CURATORIAL ASSISTANT

The Herbarium of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden is seeking a conscientious,
motivated, qualified individual for the position of Curatorial Assistant.
Under the supervision of the Herbarium Manager, the successful candidate will
work together with other technical curatorial staff and volunteers in
conducting day-to-day operations of the herbarium. Rancho Santa Ana Botanic
Garden houses one of the largest and most active botanical museums in the
western United States. Excellent opportunities exist for interaction with
research taxonomists, horticulturists, and graduate students.

Basic responsibilities will be divided between support for routine collections
management activities (e.g. mounting and filing of specimens; processing
specimen transactions; and associated record keeping) and providing technical
support for computer related activities within the herbarium (e.g. maintenance
and modification of record keeping software, maintenance of type collection
database, etc.). Occasional special curatorial and field projects are assigned
based on the individual's botanical capabilities and demonstrated interests.

The general qualifications include: Bachelor's degree in botany or biology, or
at least two years experience in an active herbarium; experience with the
microcomputer applications (including database management and design,
electronic networking, and routine systems management for DOS & Macintosh
platforms); manual dexterity sufficient to prepare specimens neatly and
quickly; and physical strength to lift and carry boxes of specimens and
supplies (50 - 60 + lbs.). The desire to work in a museum setting, and ability
to both work independently with minimal supervision and cooperatively as a
member of a close-knit team is essential. Special consideration will be given
to candidates with demonstrated skills in museum-related computer activities
and a strong working knowledge of the California flora and/or floristic field
survey and collecting practices.

Closing date for the receipt of applications is December 15, 1993.

Applicants should submit a cover letter stating interest in the position, a
curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference (have sent directly) to:
