Jeff
See Culver,D & Holsinger,J. 1992. "How Many Species of Troglobites Are There?"
in The NSS Bulletin Vol 54, Dec 1992, Nr 2, pg 79-80. Huntsville, Al: National
 Speleological Society.
They describe a method for estimating the number of troglobitic species
worldwide (50,000 to 100,000). Caves are not the type of 'belowground' you may
have in mind, but their estimating (guessing?) process may be applicable to
 you.
Cheers,
                                               ___
