Subject: Re: Computers in the field.
Last summer I used a Toshibia during 90 days of field work in the southwestern
U.S. The machine worked great, although we felt we had to take care to
keep it from getting too hot. We kept it inside an insulated bag that was
in turn stored in a ice box (without ice) which in turn rested inside our
air-conditioned van. We often were in areas where the temperature was ca.
90 to 100 in the shade during the day. You should give thought to proteting
whatever computer you use from excess heat. During our field work we used
a Garmin GPS unit which cost $825 US--special educational discount price.
The particular model was actually made for use in navigation and had various
features we never used. It was much cheaper than various Magellan units
which are specifically designed for survey and other scientific work. All
GPS units will suffer somewhat from signal dedgradation which is caused by
the U.S. military to reduce accuracy. However, the units still are accurate
within a hundred yards or so if I understand correctly. You will also want
to keep the GPS unit from excess heat. The Garmin address is: Garmin
International, Inc.
11206 Thompson Avenue
Lenexa, Kansas 66219
913, 599-1515.
They have an 800 phone, but the number probably only works from the U.S.
800, 800-1020.
A nice feature about the Toshibia is rapid replacement of units which fail
while on trips--however this 48 hour turn around time I think applies only
to certain countries. I suggest sticking with a name brand notebook and
absolutely being sure to protect from heat.
Hope this helps.
