Patenting DNA

Regarding the message describing patenting of DNA of
native flora and fauna:  does this refer specifically
to non-domesticated organisms?  Or, will the patents extend
to crops and livestock derived from wild progenitors?  Can
s single gene be patented and then traced throughout the
maze of crosses used to derive specific agriculturally
important variaties?
