FriendsI have been asked about lodging in Bangor for the conference so I'll do my best to explain those options.
Hotels in Bangor are concentrated in three areas. The northern most, thus closest to Orono, are clustered near the Bangor Mall. There is a Hampton Inn and Suites. The Country Inn at the Mall, a Hilton Garden Inn as well. Chain restaurants abound in the area.
Nearer downtown there is a new Residence Inn, The Hotel at Hollywood Casino--both pricey--and the less expensive Fireside Inn and Suites located at Geaghan's Brew Pub and Restaurant.
In the southern end of town on Odlin road there are some less-expensive chain hotels like Howard Johnsons and Motel 8. They are about 20 minutes away from campus.
The summer season here is short so the rates go north in late May. A quick look at the prices being advertised for June suggest most of all these hotels will be as or more expensive-some quite so--than the Black Bear Inn or the on campus Ursa Hotel.
Bangor has many more restaurants and bars, but there are watering holes and eateries in Orono as well.
I have been asked about how far it is to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. It takes about an hour to get there. However, there has been extensive damage to the Maine coast and some areas may be closed. It is now longer to drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain without a reservation. A very popular attraction is the tour of sites in the Bangor area featured in Stephen King movies and books. If folks are interested I can reserve a van. I don't know what the cost is but will find out if there is interest.
Lastly, our Banquet speaker will be the Quintessential American Sports Writer and outstanding columnist Bob Ryan.
All for now from snowy Swanville Maine.
