<div>Hi All! Below is a message that Pam Leitzell sent to me describing the work she is doing in NC regarding the remote instruction of teachers interested in learning about the Word Mapping Strategy. She has about 200 people enrolled in her remote learning
sessions, which is very exciting. Please respond to her invitation to share what you are doing related to remote learning for teachers! I hope you all are staying safe! Please take care of yourselves! The teachers and students definitely need YOU! Jean</div>

<div>Hi Jean,</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I hope this email finds you well!!<br>
</div>
<br>
<div>I heard from Laura Dendy that you have been filling a lot of orders for Word Mapping for our session in NC, and I wanted to reach out to you and thank you personally for working with us to get Word Mapping Manuals out to teachers for our virtual session.
I know that filling individual orders to a great number of teachers for one session is not how we have traditionally done business, and we appreciate the efforts on your end to get manuals out to those who signed up. The number of interested teachers has
been overwhelming!<br>
</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Here's a little background information regarding how this all developed:<br>
</div>
<div>Traditionally, a conference is held in Greensboro, NC every July where face-to-face sessions have been offered. It is sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's Exceptional Children Division and is held at the University of North
Carolina Greensboro Campus. For the last several years, we have provided SIM sessions during this conference and DPI orders the necessary manuals. Of course, numbers of participants are limited to size of room. Traditionally we cap at 25-30. When things
started to shut down due to the pandemic, the Division, led by Paula Crawford, went to work to think of ways to provide PD sessions virtually to teachers. Two options were designed by her team:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>A live on-line session could be designed and presented at a specific time where participants would tune-in for the session OR</li><li>A prerecorded session could be designed and offered to those interested. The participants would be provided a link, and they could listen to the session within that given time frame.
<br>
</li></ul>
With these two options available to me I chose to dive into the second option for a few reasons:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>I liked the fact that participants would have some flexibility to tune in and listen when it worked within their schedules. Although there was an established time window for viewing the presentation, it still provided flexibility within that window. I
thought this would appeal to more teachers.<br>
</li><li>I also liked the fact that the participants would be able to listen to a prerecorded session at their own pace; they would be able to pause, rewind, etc.
<br>
</li><li>On a personal note, I felt my expertise at presenting with zoom wasn't as refined as it should be to make sure the presentation would go smoothly, so prerecording fell within my comfort zone.</li><li>I also decided to split the presentation into sections, so the session included a 3-part video component along with a handout to be used for each section. It provided natural stopping points to pause, if participants chose not to sit through the entire
thing in one sitting<br>
</li><li>Participants would need to fill out an online survey at the end of the session, so we have made plans to follow-up with respondents and invite them to a live Q&A session to be held next month.</li></ul>
The partnership I have with Paula Crawford and her division made this possible. They made sure to get the registration out to people and took care of registration on their end (online registration along with order forms and handouts attached). I handled the
presentation (developing the presentation, creating handouts, videotaping the session, etc.) and turned it all over to Paula's department (specifically Laura Dendy and Ginger Starling) for release to participants. I am thrilled that so many teachers wanted
to learn the strategy. <br>
</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I am considering working on future ventures with them to present other strategies in this way. It has been a steep learning curve for me because I am so used to presenting in person. I definitely had no idea how to create and edit an mp4 video prior
to all this!!! It is certainly a new experience for me. <br>
</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>On a side note,</div>
<div>I am presenting Xtreme Reading to at least two districts in August. It will be a combination of prerecorded videos that I have made and live online sessions. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I am always willing to chat with others about the process we have been going through to rethink ways to offer PD for teachers. I would love to hear what others are doing and learn from them!!</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Take care and stay healthy!! I appreciate all you do to support teachers.</div>
<div>Most sincerely,<br>
</div>
