It is a dark time for all of us who care deeply about educating all students. For those who may not know about the 5 Calls app, I find it helpful since you can easily find your congressional representatives with phone numbers you can use in the app with even a suggested script for important topics. I called my reps this morning about my concern about the elimination of the DOE and the protection of IDEA.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Public Law 94-142, known today as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The Administration has issued an Executive Order to begin dismantling the U.S. Department of Education. The Center for Research on Learning at KU began in 1978 as one of five U.S. DOE funded institutes to research the type of instruction adolescents with learning disabilities require for access to the curriculum and their life aspirations. Dismantling the Department of Education may have detrimental effects at all educational levels including:

  *   Loss of federal protections of students’ rights,
  *   Loss of direct, dedicated funding for special education services,
  *   Loss of personnel preparation funding during an existing nationwide shortage of special education professionals,
  *   Loss of the commitment of our nation to provide education for all in equitable and inclusive environments, and
  *   Loss of essential research funding to advance the field of special education.
We urge policymakers to unequivocally reject these attempts to close the Department of Education.
