Hi all! I’ve heard that people are having difficulty convincing administrators to adopt SIM programs. In an effort to give you something to say (and give) to them, I’m attaching the article I recently wrote about the 40 years of research that are behind the Xtreme Reading Program. This article:
• Describes the components in the Xtreme Reading Program
• Connects the components of Xtreme Reading to the Science of Reading
• Reviews some of the individual studies that were conducted on four components of the program (Word ID, Word Mapping, LINCS, and Inference Strategies).
• Clearly shows that in the individual studies, students’ word decoding and reading comprehension scores increased by several grade levels. Showing results related to grade-level increases is VERY unusual in the research literature.
• Reviews some of the results from field tests of the whole Xtreme Reading Program. As a part of this section on the field tests, a table is presented that shows the results from individual teachers’ classes where the pretest and posttest were given. This table (p. 13) shows that all the teachers were able to produce mean gains of at least one grade level in reading. All of the posttest results were significantly different from the pretest results. I have not seen results presented like this for individual teachers in a field test—ever!
The best results in this table are being replicated in several states by several teachers where Xtreme Reading is being implemented with fidelity.

In essence, this article presents information in a way that can help administrators see the results they can achieve if they adopt Xtreme Reading and their teachers implement the program with fidelity. It illustrates the rationale behind ensuring that teachers implement with fidelity. Please let me know if you have questions about this article. Thanks always for ALL that you are doing to help students learn to read!! Jean
