[Simtrainer-l] Alignment of CER's with Universal Design

HI. I believe SIM PDers have conducted several alignments between UDL and
The Content Enhancement Routines over the years. In general, the CO is a
graphic organizer teaching device designed to be used with students to
visually represent course expectations, facilitate the learning of course
big ideas, and guide students' learning through the course. The research on
the use of graphic organizers for increasing learning for students who
struggle with learning is significant. There is also research that graphic
organizers designed for use to promote learning for individuals also
increases learning when used to teach a group of learners - a key
defining principle in using UDL. The Course Organizer Routine meets all
the UDL guidelines for promoting multiple means of representation,
engagement, and action and expression. It is co-constructed with the class
at the beginning of the year and then used to pull together learning of the
big ideas after every unit. It is used to surface, discuss, and promote key
learning outcomes as well as teaching students ways of reaching these
outcomes with a class.

While there are specific instructions related to how to use the CO for
effective learning to promote learning for a whole group while meeting the
needs of individuals, teachers may not use it correctly. However, the
effectiveness of any intervention may be compromised by poor
implementation.

It would be helpful to know what aspects of the use of graphic organizers
and the CO that your colleague believes do not meet UDL guidelines. The CRL
has worked with CAST on many projects that connect graphic organizers to
UDL over the past thirty years. CRL researchers worked with David Rose, one
of the designers of the application of UDL, specifically on the use of the
CERS, as well as other SIM interventions, as specific applications of UDL.
I would be happy to help you more if I can. Keith
