Hi Vicki, This is one of the most inspiring stories I’ve heard about Possible Selves. You capture the potential power of understanding student hope for the future and the way that sharing personal goals strengthens relationships between students and teachers.

I really like the way you supported the teacher as she worked to gain student trust. And I liked the way the teacher creatively adapted PS to include a strong career exploration experience for students once they were able to share career aspirations.

Thanks so much for making my day!

Mike

Good Morning!

I was one of the PDers who worked in Newton, Iowa. A middle school teacher named Alicia Hamm saw great success with Possible Selves. She was a first year teacher, and she was experiencing challenges with classroom management. The principal asked me if I had any ideas which would help. I suggested Possible Selves, and we began intense collaboration. It was amazing the way the students responded! I remember that one student wanted to become a chef, so Alicia and I suggested that he prepare one new dinner entree for his family each week. We designed an additional sheet besides the ones in the manual because he believed he needed help with organization. It contained an area for the recipe as well as the steps and prices of the ingredients. We also gave him a sheet for feedback from those he served.
This student also shared a snack item with the class and reported the preparation process. I suggested to Alicia that we contact a chef in Des Moines (less than an hour away) and invite him to be a guest speaker. He declined the invitation, but offered to talk with this student if he could come to his restaurant. I believe that did happen. This student seemed to mature, and his behavior in class drastically improved.

There are other stories I could share. Alicia invited several people from the community to speak: a fireman, cattle breeder, veterinarian, mechanic, and others. Alicia spent time guiding the students to ask good questions. The best result for Alicia was much improved classroom behavior as well as better engagement in other areas of instruction. I observed the development of mutual respect during my visits. Possible Selves provides the opportunities for teachers to know students as individuals, and the students appreciate the interest and help given by the teacher.

I don't know if these are the resources you had in mind. My suggestion for teaching urban students has been the same when coaching teachers in PS. Involve professionals in the community as much as possible. Give them some guidance such as informing the students about the various skills needed to perform the duties of their occupation. I have been amused when students appear surprised when the skill of writing well is mentioned often.

Feel free to contact me if there is anything I can do to help. My husband and I recently moved to Warrenton, MO. I always welcome collaboration.

Vicki

Hi Susanne, Thanks for the PS inquiry. I don’t remember any PS materials being developed for rural educators. That may have happened, but I’m not sure what that would be. PS seems very generic to me so not sure what adaptations would be necessary. Sorry.

I’ve just finished writing Possible Selves, 2nd Edition that makes extensive use of technology to make PS easier for students to complete activities. I’d be glad to share a copy with you to see if it’s a better fit for rural educators. I’d also be happy to visit with you and rural educators and answer questions.

Sorry I don’t have what you were looking for. Maybe the new edition will help?

Take care for mow,

Mike

Hi all,

I remember there were resources at one time to supplement Possible Selves for more rural communities. I think it was when a group of PDers were working in Iowa. I checked Simville and did not see these materials. Does anyone have any resources to supplement Possible Selves they would be willing to share with me? Thanks!
