Hi all! Attached is an article that Keith Lenz sent me. (Thanks, Keith!) It focuses on the importance of teaching “Sentence Comprehension.” Of course, that is exactly what is happening when we teach students to work with the various complexities of sentences in the Sentence Writing Strategy Programs. As they learn about the various structures of sentences, they learn to understand them as well as write them. For example, when they learn to name the coordinating conjunctions and what they mean, they become better able to read and understand Compound Sentences. Thus, they become better able to read more complex text, which is important in the secondary grades. The fact that teaching sentence writing can affect reading scores is an important notion that will be helpful to school personnel as they are making decisions about what strategies to teach. They might think that they should focus solely on reading strategies. Jean

P.S. Now that I think more about this, I think there may be a few new research studies hidden in this article! Please let me know if you want to kick around some research ideas on this!

P.P.S. Another great resource for you as you speak with school personnel is the recent EXCELLENT Stratenotes article by Dana McCaleb on how the writing strategies relate to The Writing Revolution by Hochman and Wexler. Thank you, Dana, for your wonderful work!
