Hi Sue,
Differentiated Visual Tools (DVTs) are the newest addition to Content Enhancement. These are discipline-specific graphic organizers (GOs) to enhance content and language literacy instruction. Each DVT is individually designed for teaching a specific content and/or language literacy standard in a manner that maximizes learning, while at the same time, reduce teachers’ and students’ cognitive load. DVTs differ from traditional CE tools (e.g., Frames, Concept Diagrams) in that those tools are generic (e.g., designed for use across the curriculum) where as DVTs are designed for specific content-areas.

The instructional paradigm also differs in that DVT instruction features “scaffolded inquiry-based learning” – an approach to teaching that uses explicit instruction (e.g., Cue-Do-Review) to provide critical background knowledge and then shifts to inquiry-based learning as students use the DVTs to structure their investigations. Thus, project-based learning is emphasized.

DVTs for High School Literature was recently published and we’re about to publish DVTs for Civics/Government. We’ve also published several DVT programs for elementary and middle schools.

If it would be helpful, I would be happy to send some Power Point slides that provide examples of DVTs and explanations.

 Best, Ed
