When working with FUSION Reading, we have often recommended these books to middle schools instead of the Bluford Series just for the reason you state. These have ALL worked extremely well … most middle school kids LOVE them! I am also attaching a list I prepared and have kept updated for the last several years that gives information (Lexile, interest level, and grade level.) I hope it helps. I can definitely vouch these books, though:

So Be It by Sarah Weeks
Parvana’s Journey by Deborah Ellis
The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis
Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelson
Freak the Mighty by Redmond Philbrick

Best,
Sue

I also teach 7th graders. I think the content of the Bluford High books may be too mature for this age group, but that depends on the life experiences of your students. I've had success with Kwame Alexander's novels in verse, The Crossover and Booked, for independent reading (as well as House Arrest, another novel in verse by K.A. Holt).

For read aloud/novel study, I'd suggest Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings or anything Hatchet-related by Gary Paulsen.

Let us know what you choose and how it works!

I'm working with 7th grade students who are reading on a 2-3rd grade level and needing suggestions for high interest, low level novels. I've heard about the Bluford series, but wondering if you have any other suggestions.

Thanks-
Jen
