<p class="MsoNormal">Colleagues, a quick update on the budget cuts we are facing.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Throughout KU every unit is facing significant budget cuts. For some departments in the College these cuts will hollow out graduate programs to a degree that will be difficult to recover from.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In POLS we faced a $30K budget cut in the first round and $50K more in the second round. The only way we can reach 80K is through cuts to lines—faculty, instructors, or GTAs.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">After consultation with the Advisory committee and Directors we are likely going to take these cuts by accepting Mariya’s formal resignation from KU. Mariya is coming to the end of her maximum time on leave and she had no plans to return
to Lawrence. Last year I attempted to work out an online teaching plan for her but the College was not interested and extended her leave instead. So at this point resignation is the only real option.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">For now this means that we won’t be cutting any GTA positions or instructors. It is possible that we’ll face further cuts, but it is also possible that the federal aid package will entice the state to provide us with more support. We’ll
see.<o:p></o:p></p>
