<p class="MsoNormal">The announcement for this went out a while ago but I wanted to send out a reminder for colleagues in the department to apply. The General Research Fund (GRF) and the Research Excellence Initiative (REI) will share the same application this
year and be reviewed a committee of social scientists at the college level. I served on the GRF review committee last year and was just asked to serve again this year. <o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I was surprised that the social science GRF was not very competitive (<span style="color:black">last year only 9 people applied for ~$100k and of that ~$58,000 was awarded, more than half of the projects were funded). Also, the REI budget
has been slashed significantly and may not be around in future cycles but the GRF has not. But for now, there’s actually even more money available and likely a similar number of applications. </span><o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:black">I was also surprised that they do not require reviewers to recuse themselves from evaluating proposals by departmental colleagues. So I’d encourage other POLS colleagues to try to serve on the committee in future.</span><o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Given the message we just got from the provost today about belt-tightening at KU, I would encourage colleagues in the department who have research needs to apply this cycle. I’d be happy to share insights about the review process and help
