Colleagues, last spring the Dean contacted me about a scholar that was going to be hired in Jewish Studies with funds from a gift to KU. The scholar is Rami Zeedan and he is a political scientist (vita attached).

Throughout the spring I understood that this appointment would be a Visiting AP or teaching fellow appointment in Jewish Studies, with no direct obligation to POLS. The idea was that Dr. Zeedan would arrive and teach at KU in August and
POLS would conduct an interview in Sep-Oct. to see if we would be interested in making a joint appointment. As such I didn’t inform the rest of you during the spring.

Amidst a series of hectic phone calls and emails from the Dean, he never mentioned that they had converted the position into a tenure track line with Jewish Studies as the principal and POLS as secondary. I now know that Jewish Studies
then conducted a brief search in April and offered Zeedan a tenure-track line.

So you might imagine my surprise this week when I learned that we have a new .50% faculty member. I am not unhappy about this, but this was not what I thought we had agreed upon. In any event, if you want to blame anyone you can blame me.

I think Zeedan is a nice addition in local politics and area studies, I just would have preferred a more standard process.

We’ll arrange a meet and greet later in the fall.

Thanks for your attention.
