<p class="MsoNormal">I hope the beginning of the semester is treating you well.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I’m writing to introduce myself and my position as the Graduate Academic Advisor for the Political Science and Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies departments. My position is housed within the College Office of Graduate Affairs (COGA). COGA
has placed advisors in a variety of departments in the College in the past few years, and the resulting collaboration between COGA and departments has proved to be invaluable. COGA has been expanding their advisor placements based on the great feedback they’ve
gotten from departments, and this new position is a result of the most recent expansion.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">My role as a COGA advisor is to ensure that graduate students and related processes are meeting all requirements and deadlines at the College and University level. I will be the first contact for graduate students for inquiries regarding
admissions, enrollment logistics, petitions, scheduling exams, graduation, and everything in between. It’s my job to be an expert on all College and University level policies and procedures related to graduate students, so I’m happy to help them solve the
tough problems and make sure they’re on the right track by communicating with them proactively and connecting them with resources to help them plan their time in the program strategically. I’ll also be working closely with Director of Graduate Study in each
department to make sure I’m providing the best support possible within the context of the department. I’m hopeful that my work will take some administrative tasks off your plates and will relieve some stress for students so they can focus on their research.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I’d like you all to take note of a couple items as I transition into my role. First, know that I will always refer students back to you when they have questions regarding the content of their research, their individual plan of study, or
other inquiries related to the content of their program rather than the logistics. I’m happy to help them (and you) ensure they’re complying with all policies and deadlines in these areas, but students are already aware that it’s outside the scope of my role
to advise them regarding academic content. Second, returning students are used to working with Linda for many of these items, so I would greatly appreciate it if you can make sure to refer them to me instead. Linda will continue to assist them with issues
related to their offices (keys, printing, etc.), but everything else related to graduate students should be directed my way.
