Welcome to the first of what I hope will be about a monthly column about what I’m reading, what I’m excited about reading, and what you all might want to watch for. This column will mostly highlight mysteries because that is what I most enjoy reading in my spare time, but my criterium is only “what I’m reading right now that I want to tell you all about.”

Summer is when I return to a favorite mystery series and remind myself why I loved it. This month’s heavy rotation is the Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas. The first book is A Study in Scarlet Women<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=ef4f112856&e=fba4498d39>. The premise is that the great detective is really Charlotte Holmes masquerading as her “brother” Sherlock. Charlotte has all the traditional Holmesian intellectual characteristics; she annoys and astonishes people by telling them their life stories after observing them for only a few minutes; she is phlegmatic and practical but also a devotee of sweets and garish dresses. She is assisted in her masquerade by Joanna Watson, the widow of Dr. John Watson. Miss Moriarty, I Presume?<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=c07512883e&e=fba4498d39> is out in November.

The second series I am rereading is another Holmes pastiche, Laurie R. King’s Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes series that begins with The Beekeeper’s Apprentice<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=f1c8fbcac7&e=fba4498d39>. In King’s books, Holmes is retired, living in the countryside, and keeping bees when he meets the young Mary Russell. Precocious and intellectual, Russell becomes his companion in crime solving. These are smart, well-written historical novels that also follow in the tradition of Conan Doyle. The newest Russell/Holmes mystery came out this week: Castle Shade<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=7589a104e7&e=fba4498d39> is the 17th installment.

The third of my favorites in rewind this month are Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache books that begin with Still Life<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=1823b44074&e=fba4498d39>. I know several of you are readers of this series as are a few of the Raven staff. Penny’s books just get better and better. Currently in the middle of A Fatal Grace<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=767fe5aaae&e=fba4498d39>, I am reminded again of Penny’s elegant prose and the depth of her characterizations. While Gamache is the “detective” in these books, the real protagonist is the village of Three Pines in Quebec and its myriad of citizens you come to know so well and love. Penny has been a finalist and/or winner of most of the major mystery awards including the “Agatha,” “Macavity,” and “Edgar” for every one of her Inspector Gamache books. The Madness of Crowds<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=f713220c6a&e=fba4498d39>, appears in August.

There are some very exciting looking books on the new mystery shelf at the Raven. I thoroughly enjoyed Murder in Old Bombay<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=93a415fc40&e=fba4498d39> by Nev March. This “can’t-put-it-down” mystery is set in 1892 Bombay with all the political and social tensions of a nation under colonial rule. March loved Kim<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=3c3f7710f6&e=fba4498d39> as a child, and there are many echoes of Kipling’s classic in this complex mystery that is an atmospheric feast with an abundance of historical detail. Captain Jim Agnihotri is trying to solve the mysterious deaths of two women thrown from a university clock tower. . .or did they jump? (By the way, if you have not reread Kim recently, put it on your stack. It’s extraordinary.)

In keeping with the Indian theme is a new installment of Sujata Massey’s Perveen Mistry mysteries called The Bombay Prince<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=58ee922f05&e=fba4498d39>. Many of you may remember Massey’s wonderful Rei Shimura series set in Japan that began with The Salaryman’s Wife<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=a9ad481c77&e=fba4498d39>. This new series is now in book three and promises as much wonderful detail and characterization. The first one is The Widows of Malabar Hill<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=c422512fab&e=fba4498d39>.

Anne Hillerman’s The Stargazer<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=85a0287cb6&e=fba4498d39> is out this month. She succeeds in rebooting her father Tony Hillerman’s Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee mysteries but focuses on Bernadette (Bernie) Manuelito, a Navajo Police Officer. I loved Tony Hillerman’s compelling evocations of the Southwest and Navajo culture, and Anne Hillerman is really carving out her own niche successfully with her take on these books. If you have not read Tony Hillerman, you should. Start with The Blessing Way<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=7b3120f276&e=fba4498d39>. If you want to start with Anne, that is just fine. The first is The Spider Woman’s Daughter<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=7f23834d9f&e=fba4498d39>.

Did you notice IQ<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=14bf5835f7&e=fba4498d39> by Joe Ide when it came out? Such a fascinating main character in Isaiah Quintabe--known as I.Q., who solves crimes in the darkest and most disenfranchised neighborhoods of Los Angeles. These are fast paced, darkly funny, unique mysteries. The new book out right now is Smoke<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=f95d76d875&e=fba4498d39>.

Other promising new books on the mystery shelf: Ann Cleeves, The Darkest Evening<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=4aa45cb7a3&e=fba4498d39>, book nine in the Vera Stanhope series. Harlan Coben has a new offering called Win<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=0fce093666&e=fba4498d39>. It is not a series yet but has potential. I am intrigued by The Photographer<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=d7317410ec&e=fba4498d39> by Mary Dixie Carter. The main character is professional photographer in New York City, who dreams of the better life, and decides to move in (literally) to the life of one of her clients. This thriller has Gone Girl and The Woman at the Window vibes. Surely, there is also a story about Carter’s protagonist’s improbable name: Delta Dawn. Now that you have that song in your head, I’ll move on. . . .

Are you a subscriber to the Raven’s Mystery Book of the Month<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=557d95fd75&e=fba4498d39>? This month’s novel is East of Hounslow<https://ravenbookstore.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d9bcebbbb4eb24c2d693b682&id=556c37c93e&e=fba4498d39> by Khurrum Rahman. This edgy thriller features Jay Qasim, a low-level dope dealer in West London’s Hounslow district. He is a Western-born Pakistani, an observant Muslim, and devoted to his mum. MI5 (the British spy agency) taps him for a special mission, and the subsequent roller-coaster ride is fun and exciting.
The summer reading list just keeps getting longer and longer! I hope some of these are intriguing to you. There are lots of other new mysteries at the Raven right now as well. Happy Reading!
