RE: FY19 Minerva Research Initiative Opportunity
The Minerva Research Initiative is a Department of Defense program to support basic, unclassified research at the intersection of social science and security. Each year they present a set of detailed Topics of Interest (attached). This year's solicitation seeks proposals around economic interdependence, balance of power, logistics infrastructure, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and social interaction, and alliances and burden-sharing. Multi-disciplinary teams are encouraged.
While the FOA has not yet been released, past awards have averaged about $450K/year for 3-year projects. KU has been successful at least twice.
The Office of Research will host an information session about the Minerva program next Friday, May 10, in the CLAS Conference Room (Strong Hall 210) from 1-2. We will briefly review the program and submission procedures and introduce resources at KU that could help you develop a Minerva project. This is also a good opportunity to develop networking with similarly interested faculty.
If you have any questions about the program feel free to contact me. I would also encourage you to look at the Minerva Initiative website<https://minerva.defense.gov/>. They have links to awarded projects, an excellent blog on social science and security that you can follow (The Owl in the Olive Tree<https://minerva.defense.gov/Voices/The-Owl-and-Olive/>). You may also be interested in a current project<https://sites.nationalacademies.org/DBASSE/BBCSS/Assessing-the-Minerva-Research-Initiative/index.htm> of the National Academies Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences to review /assess the Minerva Initiative.
