Subject: KU Tradition of Excellence Award

Dear Dr. Haider-Markel,

Hello! My name is Zach Winterman, and I am Vice President of Fundraising for the KU Student Endowment Board. For many years we have offered the Tradition of Excellence Award to students on campus. The Tradition of Excellence Award is awarded to University of Kansas students who are dedicated to upholding the prestige and history of the students who came before them, and who wish to continue carving a path of distinction for the future. Often seen as visionaries and leaders among their peers, these students strive to contribute to the development and ongoing success of the University of Kansas. Whether they enrich the learning of others by serving as a teaching assistant, dedicate themselves their chosen student organization, donate their time through service to the Lawrence community or just enjoy being the captain of their dorm’s intramural team, these students actively and positively enhance the KU community through several different avenues. They all share one common goal: leaving their positive, everlasting legacy at the University of Kansas. Funding for this award is provided by philanthropic activities of the Student Endowment Board, as sponsored by KU Endowment.

Students who are eligible for the award would meet the following requirements:

  * Be a current, full-time undergraduate or graduate KU student in good standing with the university at the time of application and disbursement of award,
  * Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 unweighted scale,
  * Have demonstrated individual initiative, creativity, responsibility, cooperation, campus enrichment, and leadership ability,
  * Must show how they have made a significant contribution to the University of Kansas, both present and future, and
  * Submit an essay of no more than 750 words.
  * ***Student Endowment Board members are not eligible to apply for or receive this award.

We award a maximum of $1,000 to each candidate. Applications open February 22nd and close March 22nd at midnight, and can be found at www.kuendowment.org/excellence<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kuendowment.org%2Fexcellence&data=02%7C01%7Cdhmarkel%40ku.edu%7Ce60d889542da47d30bd808d695351314%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C636860452520011095&sdata=5I514%2F9BelL3dxjHcryO06qyfCJmt0yB%2FA30urD06xY%3D&reserved=0>.

We hope you will not only forward this on to your students to apply, but also nominate students whom you think have left a Tradition of Excellence at the university. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Hope you’re having a great day!

Thank you,

Zach
