I'm Afraid to Talk About... Navigating Open Discussion, Inclusiveness, and Free Speech in the Classroom
Monday, February 19, 12 to 1 PM
CTE-135 Budig Hall
Have you experienced "difficult conversations" in your classroom? What are the best ways to navigate these situations to ensure inclusiveness and a safe climate for all? Are you aware of the current KU and KBOR policies related to academic freedom and appropriate conduct? What is the formal process after a complaint has been made against a faculty member? This interactive workshop will help you navigate open discussion and be more informed about free speech in the classroom. With Yvonnes Chen, Journalism and Mass Communications, and Sean Seyer, Humanities.

Applying the Lessons of Learning Science to Teaching
Wednesday, February 28, 12 to 1 PM
CTE-135 Budig Hall
Lessons from learning science show that students' learning can be derailed by deep-seated prior knowledge, misconceptions, and world views. In this interactive session, we will explore strategies for identifying and addressing your students' cognitive impediments in order to promote real conceptual change. With Andrea Greenhoot, CTE/Psychology, and Meagan Patterson, Educational Psychology.

Making the Most of Active Learning Spaces
Friday, March 9, 12 to 1 PM
EEEC Building-164 Ritchie
New classrooms on the Lawrence campus offer exciting opportunities for innovative teaching and learning. Those rooms require fresh thinking about assignments, use of class time, student interaction, and the role of instructors. Join us in one of the new rooms in the Earth, Energy and Environment Center as we discuss strategies for using these dynamic new spaces. With Doug Ward, CTE/Journalism and Mass Communications.

Disinvestment in Higher Education-and Why It Matters to Faculty
Wednesday, March 28, 12 to 1 PM
CTE-135 Budig Hall
Since a peak in 2002, state funding for the six Kansas Regents universities has fallen more than 22 percent when adjusted for inflation. That diminished contribution has affected everything from class size and building maintenance to university salaries and institutional strategy. Join us as we discuss why this has happened and what the implications for the future might be. With Reggie Robinson, Public Affairs.

My Class Is Over: Capturing and Analyzing Students' Learning (Before I Forget About It)
Tuesday, May 8, 11:30 AM to 1 PM
CTE-135 Budig Hall
Lee Shulman called it "pedagogical amnesia," a condition characterized by the inability to recall the results of our experiences teaching a course. In this workshop, you will learn what materials to collect and what prompts to use to document your teaching, which will help you next time you teach a course, as well as help you prepare for reviews. With Andrea Greenhoot, CTE/Psychology; Joshua Potter, CTE; and Doug Ward, CTE/Journalism and Mass Communications.
