Attention Faculty, great opportunity for summer research support: Faculty wishing to become Thompson Research Scholarship Mentors can apply now for this summer's program. The benefit to our faculty is tangible and timely, as you will receive at least one graduate assistant and work in collaboration with that individual to further summer research goals.
Several other faculty have used funds to further their own research and still others have presented papers at conferences. Faculty only need to provide the graduate committee with a short proposal indicating research interest and plan (see more details below under Faculty). I encourage you to read the full description of the program (below) that will be advertised to graduate students shortly after faculty have submitted proposals. If you have any questions please contact me. mjoz at ku.edu<mailto:mjoz at ku.edu>

Faculty
1. Proposals for program will be accepted by the graduate committee
2. Include in the proposal
a. Topic: what will you be researching.
b. Need: outline tasks to be accomplished and projected hours students will work.
c. Presentation: what political science conference(s) do you intend to present this research?
3. Ideally, we would like to offer scholarships to students who would work with another student in teams of two. However, we recognize different arrangements are likely and faculty projects may only demand one student.
4. If more faculty proposals are submitted than the number we can accommodate, faculty that have yet to receive scholars will be given priority. In addition, if the number of faculty proposals outnumber students applications, then proposals that can be matched with student applications will be the only proposals supported.
5. Scholarships can be used for student travel as well. If you have travel plans to another country and would like support from a graduate student, please apply for a Thompson. The 3K can be used for graduate student travel, in-country expenses, etc.
6. Finally, if your work requires knowledge of a new methodological skill or refinement of an existing approach, Thompson scholarships can be used for student educational conferences -- examples include University of Michigan's summer methods classes and/or Syracuse University's qualitative and multi-methods research approaches.

Thompson Scholar Summer Research Program (sent to students)

Description
The Thompson Scholar Summer Research Program at University of Kansas is an opportunity to spend 2 months of summer doing graduate research in political science. Each spring several graduate students will be selected to work on research projects with Kansas University political science faculty members. Selected students will receive a scholarship of $3,000 and are expected to work closely with faculty on various research projects. Students and professors are expected to attend a political science conference the following academic year to present research findings. One of objectives of this program is to publish such findings in political science journals/books. If funding is available, we will make every effort to help students pay for the cost of travel to conference as well.

Dates
June, July.

Research Topics and Faculty Advisors
Each spring, the graduate committee will select faculty to lead projects. Faculty will be required to submit a one - page proposal, which includes topic of research, intended work to be accomplished in summer, and potential conference for presentation of research. The expectation is that research will be presented at a conference and submitted for publication. Faculty may apply every year, though priority is given to new faculty applicants. Selected topics and faculty will then be advertised, and graduate students encouraged to apply for the program.

Requirements
To apply for the program, a student must satisfy the following requirements.

3. Participate in all required program work, as designated by faculty advisor, including presentation at conference.
