1a. Incoming Faculty
We have 16 new faculty members starting this fall (the list is attached in this email). There is a new faculty welcome reception on September 22 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in The Commons.  I hope you will all come to the reception to welcome our new faculty and encourage all the faculty in your unit to attend as well.

1b. Hiring Requests (for a fall 2017 start date)
Thank you for putting in your requests for faculty hires in the spring.  As you know our budget situation has made hiring difficult for the coming year. As I mentioned in the Chairs and Directors retreat, we understand how challenging the absence of hires can be for our units and we are optimistic that we will return to a more traditional level of hiring in the coming year (assuming no significant additional State-level cuts).

Below are the 6 approved hires that are funded at 50% or more from our base budget.

*         Center for Global & International Studies

*         Ecology & Evolutionary Biology

*         Molecular Biosciences

*         Computational Biology

*         Philosophy

*         Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies

With considerable creativity and effort from our units and campus partners, we were able to approve nine (9) additional hires that are funded < 25% from our base budget, with significant funding coming from a combination of endowed funds, diversity bridge funds, and/or significant contributions from other units outside of the College.

*         Applied Behavioral Science

*         English*

*         Film & Media Studies

*         Humanities Program

*         Mathematics

*         Physics & Astronomy

*         Political Science

*         Spanish & Portuguese

*         Theatre

*The Hire in English does not meet the specific criteria above but was initiated by a significant endowed professorship gift.
