<p class="MsoNormal">I am the Emergency Management Specialist at KU. I am reaching out to you again because the KU Public Safety Office is hosting our last two sessions in our lunch and learn lecture series. First, we have a lecture with Dr. Phillip Drake from

 the English Department who will present, <b>“Biting the Hand that Aids You: The Politics of Disease Management and Bali Rabies Outbreak.”</b> Dr. Drake’s lecture session is

Friday, April 27th from 12:30PM-1:30PM in the Media Crossroads Room, 4th level of the Union.

I have attached a flyer about the event.  Below is a synopsis of Dr. Drake’s lecture and research.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Californian FB",serif">“Since first appearing on the Indonesian island of Bali in 2008, rabies has killed hundreds of people and thousands of semi-feral dogs. This presentation tracks this rabies

 outbreak and the efforts to contain the disease. It argues that frictions between government officials and animal welfare activists led to policies that prioritized political and economic interests above community health interests, unnecessarily exposing people

 and animals to a heightened risk of infection. This problem of stakeholders ostensibly acting against their own health interests appears in other emergency contexts (e.g., ignoring scientific evidence, participating in high-risk behavior, advocating for dangerous

 policies, etc.) and warrants further interdisciplinary scholarly attention.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Secondly, the KU Police will put on a De-escalation and Crisis Communication Seminar on Tuesday, May 1<sup>st</sup> from 11:30AM-12:30PM in the Alderson Auditorium, 4<sup>th</sup> level of the Kansas Union.  This seminar will be the final

 event of the Office of Public Safety, Emergency Management Lecture Series.  A synopsis of this seminar is below.   <o:p></o:p></p>
