Geopolitics of Aid: Chinese, Russian, and American COVID-19 Assistance

Join us as we welcome Dr. Maria Omelicheva, and KU Political Science professor, Dr. Brittnee Carter, for a talk titled "Geopolitics of Aid: Chinese, Russian, and American Covid-19 Assistance."

What motivates states to assist other countries in need? When the demand for life-saving aid is high, but the resources are scarce, how do countries decide which lives are worth saving?

Dr. Mariya Y. Omelicheva and Dr. Brittnee Carter examine in their book “COVID-19 ‘Humanitarianism’: Geopolitical Logics of Chinese, American, and Russian Assistance” the nexus between global health and medical humanitarianism, and global health security and geopolitics. The book illuminates the role that identity, history, and political discourse have in shaping Chinese, American, and Russian approaches to humanitarian aid, and how the competition over alternative understandings of humanitarian assistance affects the integrity of global health humanitarian system.
