Economic Firmcraft: Public Perceptions Survey Experiment Design
12:30pm, Friday April 19 (after faculty meeting) -
Cora Caton will be presenting her survey experiment design for two of her dissertation chapters, and seeking feedback on the structure and wording of the vignettes and questions before she fields the surveys.
Her dissertation is examining a phenomenon she is calling Economic Firmcraft. Multinational firms have been engaging in international conflicts in a way that departs from expectation. Firms have historically avoided sanctions or simply exited markets in response to political upheaval. Now, they are starting to make public shows of condemning governments and leaving those markets. These look a lot like traditional Economic Statecraft, or diplomatic and economic sanctions.
Chapter 1 of the dissertation will argue that the reason firms are behaving this way is to appeal to the public, meaning that more consumer-oriented firms (firms that sell to/deal with the public directly) will be more likely to do so. Chapters 2 and 3 will use survey experiments to see (1) how the public feels about firms doing this and (2) how it might affect the way the public views political leaders, especially if they trail behind companies in responding to foreign conflicts.
She will be looking for feedback on the design and wording of the survey experiments for Chapters 2 and 3. All faculty and graduate students are welcome to attend!
