Subject: Destructive earthquakes in Turkey

Dear KU Friends,

You likely have heard about the unprecedented destruction in south/southeastern Turkey. Multiple major earthquakes (two above 7.5 magnitude and two other 6.5 magnitude -excluding hundreds of other aftershocks some of which were 5+ magnitude) hit the same area early Monday morning; Turkey’s largest 5th and 6th cities -and other large cities as well- are in this area. The World Health Organization estimated -in an NPR interview this morning- that about 23 million people are affected. Millions will have no homes in the next many months.

If you would like to contribute to recovery efforts, here are some ways to do so:

The Turkish Red Crescent webpage<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kizilay.org.tr%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cpols-announce%40lists.ku.edu%7Cde6c8604a40f46775cac08db09de0ee0%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C638114621552271696%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=20b9MDwOxBPUKm8a87EBVqjO8rKREh0ImsEkHVtaceQ%3D&reserved=0> should allow monetary contributions -they are government affiliated.

The AKUT<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.akut.org.tr%2Fbagis-yap&data=05%7C01%7Cpols-announce%40lists.ku.edu%7Cde6c8604a40f46775cac08db09de0ee0%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C638114621552271696%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=P9woBLUhfhOUXJlZRPC0TlXn3efzGrYVazO%2FYvWJDoo%3D&reserved=0> [Search and Rescue Association], an NGO, is a reputable organization -recently, they came under government-affiliated groups’ control as well. Their webpage should allow monetary contributions as well.

A New York City based philanthropic organization, Turkish Philanthropy Funds<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdonate.tpfund.org%2Fcampaign%2Ftpf-turkiye-earthquake%2Fc465112&data=05%7C01%7Cpols-announce%40lists.ku.edu%7Cde6c8604a40f46775cac08db09de0ee0%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C638114621552271696%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=bwmf1TFdJqvESacdgE%2Fh6DkGfYK3mQ5BU5WDKhvBTxk%3D&reserved=0>, will send most if not all support to AKUT -if I read that correctly.

The most organized and effective NGO on the ground appears to Ahbap<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fahbap.org%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cpols-announce%40lists.ku.edu%7Cde6c8604a40f46775cac08db09de0ee0%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C638114621552271696%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=E8F2dl%2BhKAujuXLDWH9pp0vvf2%2F0nX0kolZ7RG57jE8%3D&reserved=0> -you can also contribute monetarily on their webpage. The box on the right hand side of their webpage leads you to pay by credit card; it does ask for a Turkey-based phone number. Feel free to use my mobile phone number I use when in Turkey 531-276-3570 . [I would not know if you contributed or not, as I cannot turn on that phone while here.]

North Carolina, Triangle-based Bridge to Turkey<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbridgetoturkiye.org%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cpols-announce%40lists.ku.edu%7Cde6c8604a40f46775cac08db09de0ee0%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C638114621552271696%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=6L5TxLJaIyAGI0KrGp0q3asPDfpzM6nR2CepCfuTOsw%3D&reserved=0> is also running a campaign.

For in-kind (as well as monetary) contributions, the Turkish Embassy in DC and its consulates around the country are also accepting donations. In-kind support can be mailed out to their addresses as well (e.g., you can purchase blankets, sleeping bags, etc. on Amazon and ship at their address); these will be sent to Turkey via commercial flights. Here is a link to their tweet<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FTurkishEmbassy%2Fstatus%2F1622651588362764291%3Fs%3D20%26t%3DRen_UmhiPQutcGh5bmpFtQ&data=05%7C01%7Cpols-announce%40lists.ku.edu%7Cde6c8604a40f46775cac08db09de0ee0%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C638114621552271696%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=gkdXO4lMcEDdc2h%2BLURzKgo48bzoAmPO0xAXbw9ZOtA%3D&reserved=0>.

Finally, please also note that we are not hearing as much from Syria. A Kansas City-based NGO, founded by a KU alumna, Syria Relief and Development<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsrd.ngo%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cpols-announce%40lists.ku.edu%7Cde6c8604a40f46775cac08db09de0ee0%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C638114621552271696%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=MYN%2BsbjEgQWbgqJH06KNjjofWPwf99PUEHILEViuda0%3D&reserved=0> is well organized on the ground in Northern Syria (also into southeastern Turkey helping refugees). You will want to consider supporting their efforts in Syria. In addition, I am reading the White Helmets<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whitehelmets.org%2Fen%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cpols-announce%40lists.ku.edu%7Cde6c8604a40f46775cac08db09de0ee0%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C638114621552427905%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=svTKr1bdZcSDCt6rJpQhmWj%2BSqhGcKx6BERx6%2BC0OpA%3D&reserved=0>, an NGO, the Syria Civil Defence, are reputable for their work as well.

There are many other organizations these are the ones that come to my mind right away. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Feel free to share this email…
