The American Sociological Association (ASA) supports the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) in its stance on academic freedom and tenure. We share the concerns of our fellow sociologists in Kansas about the recent decision by the Kansas Board of Regents to temporarily allow public institutions of higher education to terminate or suspend employees-including tenured faculty-without declaring financial exigency. Don,
Thanks very much for the email. I had just learned of the proposed changes to tenure from the KU Board of Regents earlier today so I appreciate the email with the additional information. I plan to contact the APSA Council leadership about a possible APSA statement as well as a possible sign-on to the solidarity statement.
I hope to be able to get back to you by the end of the week. I would also welcome the opportunity to talk directly by phone or zoom if you thought a conversation about an APSA statement or other types of assistance would be helpful.
Let me know.
Take care and best regards,
Steve
