A week before the 2020 election, America’s foremost political prognosticator Charlie Cook joins us for an evening of campaign discussion. Cook writes election forecasts and rankings in his own publication, The Cook Political Report, and is a political analyst for the National Journal and has been with NBC since 1994. The New York Times has called Cook “one of the best political handicappers in the nation” and has said the Cook Political Report is “a newsletter which both parties regard as authoritative.” David Broder wrote in The Washington Post that Cook was “perhaps the best non-partisan tracker of Congressional races.”

Millennials are often publicly criticized for being apathetic about the American political process and their lack of interest in political careers. But what do millennials themselves have to say about the prospect of holding political office? Are they as uninterested in political issues and the future of the American political system as the media suggests? Professor Shauna Shames addresses these questions in more detail while discussing her book Out of the Running: Why Millennials Reject Political Careers and Why it Matters.

A meeting between Jim Xhema, a Greenwich, Connecticut, businessman of Albanian descent, and Kansas Sen. Bob Dole turned into a friendship that has lasted more than 30 years. A common bond, borne from shared backgrounds and mutual respect, inspired a $500,000 gift to the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas. This gift was made in conjunction with the ceremony unveiling a statue of Dole in Pristina, Kosovo, which honored the 30-year anniversary of Dole’s first visit to Pristina.

Do Endorsements Matter?
Wednesday, Oct. 28
YouTube Live, 4:00pm
Time was, newspaper endorsements were a consequential boost for campaigns but in an era of multiplying media outlets and declining newspaper subscriptions, do endorsements still carry the same weight? In 2016, Donald Trump earned the endorsements of only 20 daily newspapers in the entire country, but he won the White House. Dole Fellow Colleen McCain Nelson will convene opinion journalists to explore what role editorial boards are playing in the 2020 election and consider the question of whether traditional candidate endorsements have outlived their usefulness.
The Dole Discussion Groups are made possible by a grant from Newman’s Own.
