I was asked to forward out this information on collaborating with MARC. Please share with any students that identify as BBIP that may be interested. Thanks.
Hello! My name is Brent Ferguson, and I represent both the KU student organization Midwest Music Research Collective (MMRC) and the community action organization Musicians for an Anti-Racist College (MARC). Pleased to meet you!
I am emailing you today to ask if you would be interested in supporting a collaborative series between the two organizations: the Lunch Lecture Series. This bi-monthly virtual event will feature BBIP (Black, Brown, Indigenous Peoples) scholars and graduate students both in and out of KU sharing their research in a guest lecture environment during the lunch hour. This is an event for both graduate and undergraduate students to attend. While both of our organizations represent the music discipline, we want to give all graduate students that identify as BBIP to have this opportunity across the campus, and we are open for any subject. We hope you may have students from Political Science that might be interested in presenting at or attending this opportunity. Further, we are interested in bringing in BBIP scholars outside of KU to guest lecture at these events, but this usually requires a stipend. Our estimate is that guest lectures via Zoom will lie between $50-$200. Due to this, we are hoping for financial support for this endeavor. We of course understand if that is not possible, and we are happy to welcome participation and advertising through Political Science.
MMRC has produced several conferences now in the past three years (at least one a year). MARC and MMRC are also planning a collaborative Spring virtual conference in which we have successfully approached Dr. AD Carson for our keynote. We are encouraging marginalized students and research topics to be presented for this conference. Also, we are welcoming support of any kind for the conference as well.
If you have any questions about this collaboration or suggestions, please feel free to contact me. I would be glad to set up a Zoom meeting between you, myself, a representative of MMRC and a representative from MARC, if you would like. I have also copied the current MMRC president, Tanya Honerman, and the MMRC Treasurer, Owen Hansen.
Again, it is nice to meet you, and I hope you consider helping our graduate students start this project for KU. Please, take care!
Best,
Brent Ferguson
