Subject: Supporting Faculty Through the CTE

Dear Don,

My name is Hannah Oliha-Donaldson. I am a faculty member in Communication Studies and a member of the Center for Teaching Excellence’s Faculty Consultant Network (FCN). The FCN is a group of faculty from various disciplines tasked with supporting colleagues as we all negotiate the increase in online teaching demands and the transition to distributed classrooms.

As your FCN representative, I am part of a larger support team that includes Toshi Urata, a member of the Center for Online and Distance Learning (CODL), and Jenine Meston, a member of the IT department.

My role is to be a thought partner for faculty needing a sounding board, ideas, and tools for transitioning their content online and into hybrid formats. Here are a few practical ways I can help:

  1. Serve as a thought partner as faculty redevelop and shift content online
  2. Serve as a sounding board as faculty work through ideas for supporting student learning and fulfilling course objectives
  3. Share insights from my own experiences
  4. Offer ideas to enhance pedagogical flexibility
  5. Offer ideas for aligning course goals and instructional practices in online and hybrid contexts
  6. Offer ideas about different tools for meeting pedagogical objectives in an online learning environment
  7. Direct faculty to helpful resources to enhance online and hybrid teaching

Toshi and Jenine are available to offer technical expertise. Here are a few practical ways they can help:

  1. Answer specific questions about Blackboard and what may/may not be possible (I have sent Toshi many an email and he is always helpful!)
  2. Offer insight about the best platform/tool for fulfilling learning objectives
  3. Troubleshoot and help with technical challenges
  4. Redirect faculty to necessary technical support and resources

Beyond this, the Center for Teaching Excellence will be offering workshops over the summer and fall addressing best practices for enhancing the teaching and learning process, various aspects of online education, and the new landscape we are all negotiating. Finally, following is a link to an instructor guidebook offering information on designing courses so they can readily shift between teaching contexts (online, hybrid, and in-person): https://flexteaching.ku.edu

Please do share this helpful resource with faculty in your department.

Should any faculty need support in any of the areas listed above, please do share my contact information with them. Finally, should you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. Though times are uncertain, our capacity to support each other, learn, and grow together remain sure.

Best wishes,

Hannah
