Priority is to be given first to students of Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Belize, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, or Panama), second to Mexico, third to the Caribbean, and fourth to students of relations between the United States and any Middle American country.

Graduate students from any department in the College of Arts and Sciences are eligible. An interdisciplinary committee from Latin American and Caribbean Studies will decide the competition. The award will not exceed $5,000 per year. A student may hold the fellowship in succeeding years, at the discretion of the committee.

To Apply: Applications for the fellowship are due March 16th, 2020. Please apply here: https://deptsec.ku.edu/~clacs/forms/form/6<https://latamst.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9ad962e54cfbc7e1c3ff1e667&id=d98d9eef6c&e=5826ca57b1>. Applications should include:

Tinker Field Research Grants

Since 1979, the Tinker Field Research Grant (FRG) program has provided support to graduate students in U.S. universities to conduct pre-dissertation or master’s thesis research in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries of Latin America. Through its funding, matched by universities, the Foundation has supported more than 9,000 individuals to conduct field research in Latin America. CLACS is fortunate to be a Tinker Field Research Grant recipient for the next two years.

Funds are for pre-dissertation or master’s thesis field research in a Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking Latin American country or countries; students at the master’s or early-stage doctoral levels, or those pursuing professional degrees, are eligible. Funds are not to be used for dissertation research. (ABD students are not eligible.) The amount of the individual awards will depend on project design and budget. Funds of up to $2,500 per award (depending on budget) are to be used toward research-related travel expenses.

Latin American and Caribbean Studies Travel and Research Graduate Fellowships

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies will offer 1-2 research fellowships (generally $500 -1000 each, depending on budget) for graduate students conducting dissertation research in Latin America / the Caribbean.

To Apply for Tinker or Travel and Research Fund: Selection will be based on the proposal narrative, grade point average, letters of recommendation, and budget. Recipients of other awards (e.g. FLAS) are eligible. Applications are due March 16th, 2020. Please apply here: https://deptsec.ku.edu/~clacs/forms/form/6<https://latamst.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9ad962e54cfbc7e1c3ff1e667&id=b23625bc1e&e=5826ca57b1>. Applications should include:

Charla De Merienda: Caribbean Carnival
Tuesday, February 25, 2020, 2:30-4:00pm in The Commons @ Spooner Hall
We are partnering with the African and Caribbean Student Association for our next Charla de Merienda about carnival traditions in the Caribbean. Join us for this conversation that seeks to add complexity and nuance to our notions of the Caribbean and its myriad cultures!

Charla de Merienda is a collaborative series that carries forward the tradition of interdisciplinary discussion of research and current affairs in the Caribbean and Latin America. Moderated by Lawrence Talks! Editor-in-chief, David Tamez, Charla de Merienda models critical debate through dialogue between members of the academy and the public. In collaboration, we bring people together to examine topics of Latin American and Caribbean national and local interest. Each discussion begins by examining facts on a given topic to establish common ground; then guest speakers present prepared remarks (5-7 min), and a moderated discussion will follow.

Study Abroad in Cuba Summer 2020
In this two-week program from June 14 – June 26, students will explore Cuban culture—including the centrality and importance of Afro-Cuban culture, the continuing legacy of Castro’s Revolution and of links to the former Soviet Union, the divide with the Cuban Diaspora, and Cuba’s rich literary, film, and music production. Potential activities will include a film viewing, a music performance, a presentation on Santería (the set of religious practices linking Catholicism and beliefs brought over from enslaved African peoples), a visit to the literary and cultural center Casa de las Americas, and more. On our return, we will spend a full day in Miami in order to explore the cultural transformations of the Cuban exile community in South Florida. Application deadline is March 1. Past Presence
February 8, 2020 – June 21, 2020 Kemper Family Foundations Balcony, 408, Spencer Museum of Art
Past Presence brings together art from around the world that interrogates the stories we tell about the past and the ways these narratives may shape our present realities. Traditional means of recording and communicating histories can prove inadequate to the present need to come to terms with the past. Many artists since the 1970s have sought to bridge this gap by using historical episodes and memories as the focus of their art. Some of the artists in Past Presence explore family histories, some delve into personal memories, and others seek to understand larger historical conditions. These works provide a visual model for understanding the operation of memory, while also exposing some of its limitations and gaps. They visualize both the difficulty of fully grasping the past, and the necessity of engaging with it.
