Subject: [Pols-l] April 14, 1PM: CRMDA LaTeX Workshop
Dear POLS students
Several years ago, I created the guide document "How to Cheat on your LaTeX Homework: A Beginner's Guide to LyX and LaTeX" in large part because the POLS students had trouble using LaTeX to prepare papers. In case you did not year yet, we'll be reviewing that, along with the thesis/dissertation template, on Saturday in Watson Library Rm 455, April 14, 2018, from 1-4PM. We have several seats available and you can email Auburn Packer <crmda at ku.edu> to tell her that you might like to attend.
If you are signed already, a message like this will be sent to you separately.
The workshop is described here:
https://crmda.ku.edu/latex-20180414
Please bring a laptop computer with you. Before you come, make sure you have a working LaTeX distribution installed in your computer. Our LaTeX support page
https://crmda.ku.edu/latex
has some advice about that. Namely, install the full TeXLive distribution for you operating system (On Mac, its called MacTex). Don't fiddle with partial installs that try to save space.
If you have trouble installing LaTeX or making it work, please visit the CRMDA on the day before the workshop, at 4PM. We'll take a look at your computer. If your computer is broken on Saturday, we have 3 loaner laptops that work. On a first-come-first-serve basis, these will be available.
In case you are eager to get started, the first thing we suggest is to review our Webcast for CRMDA Guide 36: LaTeX: The Bare Minimum (https://crmda.ku.edu/guide-36-LaTeX_Overview). That gives a solid overview and key terms.
On Saturday, our time is split between two purposes
1. How to Cheat on your LaTeX Homework: A Beginner's Guide to LyX and LaTeX (https://crmda.ku.edu/guide-37-LyX_for_LaTeX_Homework)
2. The new KU thesis/dissertation template
(https://crmda.ku.edu/43.ku_thesis)
In preparation for that (very exciting) event, we uploaded a revised version of the template. The significant change this year is that authors can insert their prior credentials on page 1.
The thesis preparation guide, "Please Read the Abstract", displays the latest and greatest. It is now revised to be (even) more informative!
The new zip file is available as well at the address on the guide page.
