Subject: Scholarship for Study Abroad at the Univ. of Oslo, Norway - Summer 2018

Dear Colleagues,

The Office of Study Abroad is once again requesting your assistance in the promotion of a unique scholarship opportunity for your students to study abroad in Oslo, Norway during the Summer 2018 term!

With the generous support of Ms. Christine Pederson, KU alumnus and former participant in the International Summer School at the University of Oslo, the Office of Study Abroad will award one, $5,000 scholarship to a KU undergraduate or graduate student to participate in the International Summer School during the summer 2018.  This is a significant award, as it covers ALL tuition, room and board expenses associated with participating in the program, as well as approximately $1,000 toward the cost of international airfare.

The International Summer School at the University of Oslo<http://studyabroad.ku.edu/university-oslo-international-summer-school> offers students the opportunity to complete 3-9 credit hours in the areas of Environmental Studies (graduate), Film, History, International Studies, Language Studies (Norwegian), Peace & Conflict Studies (graduate), Political Science, Sociology, and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies.  In addition, the program has a unique focus on the promotion of peace and understanding between people of difference cultures.  With more the 600 students from approximately 100 countries participating each year, the Summer School fosters cross-cultural dialogue, comparative studies, and perspective-taking.  Detailed information on the International Summer School, including course descriptions<http://www.uio.no/english/studies/summerschool/courses/>, cultural activities and excursions, housing, and more is available online.   The application deadline for this program is January 26, 2018.   Students who apply by the priority deadline can be considered for scholarships through the ISS, in addition to the scholarship offered by KU.

The Office of Study Abroad will be hosting an Information Session on Wednesday, November 1 from 3:00 – 4:00pm in Room 4001, Wescoe Hall to share information on the program and the Pederson scholarship with interested students.  Alums of the program, including Ms. Pederson, will be present to share their experiences at the ISS and answer questions related to the program.  While the session is student-centered, we would welcome the participation of faculty and academic advisors who have an interest in learning more about this unique program and scholarship opportunity.

We would greatly appreciate your assistance in promoting this scholarship opportunity to prospective students and in encouraging them to attend the Info Session!  Text for email distribution is available below (feel free to modify as necessary).  We’d also appreciate mentions on social media or departmental newsletters distributed to students.
