Ben Rogers, a graduate student in political science, will make a
presentation at the Kansas City R User Group (RUG) on March 11. The
meetings are good opportunities for networking and finding out about
jobs in industry. Several of the former CRMDA GRAs who work in KC
businesses regularly attend these meetings.
Here's the announcement:
The Kansas City R User Group is having its first advanced topics meeting
of the year. It will be this Saturday, March 11 at 1:30 pm, at the Oak

Talk Title: Using R For Mapping with Shapefiles: Turning a Shapefile
into a Presentable Figure.
Abstract: The ability to display geographic data can be useful in
cross-sectional work, and I’ll be showing how to take a shapefile, a
commonly used method of storing geographic information, from the U.S.
Census and turn it into a presentable map using the ggplot2 and the
maptools packages. Using ggplot2, I’ll demonstrate how to transform the
shapefile into an easily plottable dataframe, as well as how to merge
data to control the colors that are displayed in each region of the map.
I’ll conclude with a discussion of ways to make the map more presentable.
