*City establishes police review board*

On Tuesday, June 19, the City Commission approved on second and final
reading Ordinance No. 9324
<https://lawrenceks.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7ca5a42664e87643b2b54d343&id=713c4223ea&e=1db547db75>
establishing a Community Police Review Board. The Community Police
Review Board was established to advise the Governing Body of the City of
Lawrence, Kansas, regarding issues affecting the Lawrence Police
Department, its policies, education, community outreach and
communications related to racial or other bias-based policing. The Board
provides an independent, accessible, and efficient means for which the
public may submit a complaint of alleged police misconduct in a
confidential manner. The Board also assists in reviewing completed
racial or other bias-based policing investigations, in accordance with
Chapter 1, Article 25 of the City Code, that are conducted by the police
department, when appropriately appealed by a complainant.

The ordinance establishes qualifications for Board members and requires
members to participate in training related to the Kansas Open Records
Act and Kansas Open Meetings Act, as well as racial or other bias-based
policing training soon after appointment to the Board. The Community
Police Review Board bylaws are available here

The City is currently seeking volunteers to serve on this board. Any
interested individual will need to ensure they meet the requirements
outlined in the ordinance under “qualifications.” The online application
form

is available for anyone interested in applying. *Please note:* If you
previously applied to the "Citizen Advisory Board for Fair and Impartial
Policing" ― before June 26, 2018 ― you will need to reapply to the new
"Community Police Review Board".
