Dear Neighborhood Representatives,

Sewer rehabilitation work continues next week – see attached schedule. In
some cases, the steam that’s used in this rehab process can look like smoke
which could cause some people to call 911 thinking that there’s a fire.
-see attached photo

While we want people to keep an eye out for fires or other neighborhood
emergencies, ideally, we also want people to do what they can to verify an
emergency situation before contacting 911. Can you convey the following
information to your neighborhoods? If possible, can this be posted on
related NextDoor or FaceBook accounts too?

The work will be ongoing and locations will change week to week. We’ll do
our best to keep you and others informed.

******

The Utilities Department is conducting sewer rehabilitation work that
generates steam as part of the installation process. There are times,
particularly during colder weather, when large plumes of steam may be seen
in a neighborhood or near someone’s house. Because these steam clouds can
look like smoke, we ask that you take a moment to verify whether you’re
seeing smoke or steam before calling/dialing 911. The non-emergency number
for dispatch is 785-832-7509 <(785)%20832-7509> if someone sees something
but is unsure whether it’s an emergency.

The sewer rehabilitation work will be ongoing and will primarily include
areas west of Iowa/McDonald Drive and north and south of 6th Street.

The following neighborhoods will potentially be affected the week of
January 22-26, 2018: Deerfield, Sunset Hill, Centennial, University Place,
Indian Hills, and the residential area SE of KU’s West Campus at Clinton
Parkway and Kasold.

********

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Porter
