Subject: [Electronic-lan] The Future of Rock Chalk Park Becomes Less Clear
LAN -
Rock Chalk Park was always a questionable investment. If it performs very well, the City is projected to lose $300,000 per year on it. To perform very well it needs to attract many basketball, volleyball, fitness and dance tournaments each year for the 20-year life of the debt on the project.
One of the doubts that LAN expressed about the Rock Chalk Park project was its viability if other competing sports areas are built in the region making it harder for Lawrence to compete successfully.
Kemper Arena is now going to become Mosaic Arena for basketball, volleyball, fitness and dance tournaments.
The City of Lawrence invested a very large sum of money in Rock Chalk Park, money that could have served a great many other more meritorious needs with less risk. LAN needs to monitor the ongoing viability of that investment. If the investment proves to be less than well-advised, LAN needs to alert current and future City Commissions not to make the same mistakes.
