I wanted to send this to the LAN listserv since several neighborhoods are affected by this testing. If the neighborhoods affected can share this information in email lists or social media pages that would be great!
Thanks,

Smoke testing to begin between Louisiana and Iowa Street and North of KU campus to 5th Street
The Utilities Department and Trekk Design Group plan to start smoke testing work on the sanitary sewer collections system on Monday, July 25. Smoke testing activities will begin in an area directly north of the University of Kansas campus and progress into the area between Louisiana and Iowa Streets and north of the KU campus to 5th Street. A map of the area is below. Neighborhoods affected include Oread, Old West Lawrence, Hillcrest, and a small part of Pinckney. Utilities staff expects the smoke testing activities to be completed in approximately 30 days within this area. However, wet ground conditions may delay smoke testing activities. The smoke testing is part of the Lawrence Department of Utilities Rapid Rainwater Reduction Program, which is the plan to decrease the inflow and infiltration of rainwater into the city’s sanitary sewer system.
Smoke testing crews will be in this focus area between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. each weekday. Smoke testing is performed by blowing smoke into the sewer pipes. Field crews document locations where smoke escapes the system. These locations are areas where storm and ground water enters the sanitary sewer system and where crews can concentrate efforts to repair breaks and defects in the sanitary sewer pipes. Residents in the specific areas will be notified prior to beginning the smoke testing activities. Individual properties affected by the smoke testing will receive a door hanger a couple of days in advance that will provide more information about when the testing will occur in that area.
The smoke is non-toxic, non-staining, and has no odor. It is white to gray in color, creates no fire hazard, and is not harmful to people or pets. Although the smoke should not enter your building, defective plumbing or dried up drain traps may allow smoke to seep in. To reduce the potential of smoke entering your building, residents should pour water into floor drains and other drains that are seldom used. Also, adding a small amount of vegetable oil will help slow down the evaporation of water in your drains.
If smoke should enter the building, ventilating the room through an open window or door will dissipate the smoke quickly. If smoke enters a building and the resident needs assistance, please notify the field technicians who are conducting the test. If any residents in this area need special assistance or know of any individual in the neighborhood who may need assistance, or would like additional information concerning schedules or technical information, please contact Nick Hoyt, I/I Manager at (785) 424-8139 or the City of Lawrence Utilities Department at (785) 832-7800.
