Independence Day is just a few days away and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire
Medical wants to remind the public that Lawrence is a fireworks-free city.
Since 2002, Lawrence has limited the use of fireworks in the city and
prohibited the sale and handling of fireworks. Some novelty items are
allowed including party poppers, snappers, snakes/glow worms, sparklers,
toy caps and toy smoke devices. The ordinance is intended to promote the
health and safety of our residents. Fireworks can be dangerous to those
handling the devices, and the loud noises and smoke can affect our
residents in a negative way. As necessary, local law enforcement can
confiscate fireworks not permitted in Lawrence. Find specific information
about allowable novelty items at http://www.lawrenceks.org/fireworks

There are many ways to celebrate the 4th of July in Lawrence without
consumer fireworks. Enjoy the long weekend this year and celebrate safely!

Fireworks-related injuries can be prevented. Lt. Tyler Tuckness with LDCFM
explains the city's fireworks regulations.
There will be no yard waste collection on Monday, July 4. Yard waste
collection will resume on July 11. No other changes are planned for the
solid waste route schedules. Commercial pick-ups will run as usual.
The city’s aquatic centers will have altered hours for the July 4th holiday.
The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, and the Outdoor Aquatic
Center, 727 Kentucky St., will be open from 1 - 6:45 p.m. The South Park
Wading Pool will be closed on Monday, July 4, and will reopen Tuesday, July
5.
The city’s annual fireworks display will be held on July 4. This year’s

will provide free shuttles from the three downtown parking garages.
Shuttles will run from 3:30 to 11:30 p.m. Parking will be free in the
parking garages on July 4 and we encourage you to park in the garages and
then ride the shuttle to Burcham Park. Parking is very limited and we hope
festival-goers will be courteous to the neighborhood surrounding the park.
Be courteous! If a veteran lives in the neighborhood, be a good neighbor
and think about the implications fireworks can have on their celebration
and daily routine. An estimated 7% to 20% of the more than 2.5 million
veterans and troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan are believed to
have developed PTSD. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, loud
blasts and flashing lights can sometimes induce panic attacks. PTSD is
characterized by emotionally re-experiencing traumatic events. The thoughts
are triggered for combat veterans by the sound of an explosion or gunfire,
or even certain sights and smells, according to the Institute of Medicine.
Pets can also be bothered by the loud noises. Make sure animals are secure
inside if they tend to react to loud noises.
People in our community can also be affected by the smoke created by
fireworks if they have respiratory and breathing difficulties. Celebrate
safely and be courteous.
