Program Background:
Duke’s Asian American and Diaspora Studies Program (AADS) was established in 2018 in response to over twenty years of student activism on campus and the 2017 assessment prepared by Dr. Sylvia Chong (University of Virginia). Asian American Studies as an academic field emerged out of the Ethnic Studies movement in the late 1960s, and there are currently over 60 universities and colleges with regular course offerings in Asian American Studies. Most degree-granting programs are located on the West and East Coasts, and Duke, in 2018, was the first university in the American South to establish a program in Asian American Studies. In summer of this year, the Asian American Center at UNC was founded also in response to student demand. Nationally, Asian American Studies is a growing field with active professional organizations (such as AAAS), peer-reviewed journals, and leading scholars in the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts.
As a new program, Asian American Studies at Duke has the potential to lead the future direction of the field by being rooted in Ethnic Studies but also by envisioning new paradigms in the twenty-first century. The Cluster Hire in Asian American Studies aims to recruit Asian Americanists who can lead the program with a new vision and help strengthen core curricular offering in Asian American Studies at Duke.

I. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2020 ASIA FELLOWS, “Contentious Politics and its Repercussions in Asia”
January 10–16, 2021 in Seoul, Korea
Deadline: 9/5/20
We continue to invite applications from early-career scholars who would like to participate in the next APSA Asia Pacific Workshop. The program is an opportunity to connect with scholars from across East and Southeast Asia and advance research related to the study of contentious politics in Asia. The workshop is part of a multi-year effort to support political science research among early-career scholars in East and Southeast Asia, and to strengthen research networks linking Asian scholars with colleagues overseas.
The workshop will be held from January 10–16, 2021 in partnership with Korea University in Seoul. Leading the workshop will be Teri L. Caraway (University of Minnesota), Edmund W. Cheng (City University of Hong Kong), Jai Kwan Jung (Korea University), and Teresa Wright (California State University-Long Beach). The organizers will cover participation costs (including airfare, lodging, and materials) for up to 22 qualified applicants. The working language of the workshop is English.
The deadline for applications has been extended to Saturday, September 5, 2020. See the Call for Applications.pdf.
Eligible Participants
The workshop is intended for PhD students and post-doctoral fellows in political science, international relations, and other social science disciplines who are citizens of countries in East and Southeast Asia, especially those who are currently based at universities or research institutes in the region (defined as Brunei, Cambodia, China, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam). We also welcome applications from citizens of countries outside the region or who are currently based at universities or research institutes in the United States.
Scholars should apply with a manuscript or research project in progress that they will present at the workshop. Professional fluency in English is required. Applications from scholars working on topics related to the workshop theme (as described below) are especially encouraged.
Workshop Theme
Focusing on East and Southeast Asia, this workshop will examine the conditions under which popular contention erupts and evolves, shapes political institutions, produces political changes, or solidifies the status quo. The workshop adopts a broad interpretation of contentious politics, including revolutions, social movements, protests, and insurgencies. Participants will explore key theories and puzzles in the study of contentious politics, as well as their connections to and implications for wider inquiries concerning interest articulation, collective action, democratization, governance, regime legitimacy, civic engagement, and conflict resolution. Participants will utilize a range of methodological tools to analyze public behavior and opinion, mobilizing structures, state responses, and political outcomes before, during, and after the occurrence of popular protests. Thematic emphases include:
Origins and Dynamics of Popular Contention
• Political process, resource mobilization, and cultural communication approaches
• Explaining the ebb and flow of protest events
• Channels and repertoires of mobilization, coordination, diffusion facilitated by digital communication technologies and antecedent movement networks
• The role of elite coalitions, civil society capacity, and international linkages in shaping the motivations, tactics, frames, and identities of political contention
Democratic Recession, Authoritarian Resilience, and State Protest Responses
• Liberal democracies, hybrid regimes, and one-party authoritarianism during political upheavals
• Repression, concession, toleration, attrition, counter-mobilization, propaganda, and fake news
• The policing of protests and its impact on the function/legitimacy of court systems and other institutions
• The institutionalization or deinstitutionalization of movement organizations, political parties, and leaderless movements in the aftermath of mass mobilization
Political Institutions, Movement Networks, and Conflict Resolution
• Institutional innovations to enhance accountability, transparency, and/or openness, and to resolve conflicts and rebuild public trust
• Initiatives to increase institutions’ capacity to co-opt, absorb, or represent a range of societal interests
• The formation of post-movement alliances and their engagement/contention with regime authorities
Advanced Field Methods and Research Potentials
• The challenges of survey protests: sampling frames, survey methods, representativeness, and validity
• Toolkits for executing ethnography, onsite surveys, experiment design and big data analysis
• Comparison of research findings obtained from different approaches, methods, and case studies
To provide a framework for reflection and investigation, attendees will critically assess various conceptual frameworks, case studies, research designs, and methodological tools. The workshop will include toolkit sessions on conducting fieldwork, framing research puzzles, publication ethics, manuscript preparation and publication, serving as a good reviewer, and other professional development topics. Academic sessions will include guest lectures, roundtable discussions, and panel discussions of participants’ research. Following the workshop, alumni will receive 2 years’ membership to APSA and will be eligible to apply for small research grants.
Contingency Plan
The 2019-2020 protests in Hong Kong are illustrative of the popular contention that is the focus of this workshop. At the same time, the rapid spread of COVID-19 highlights the uncertainty and ever-changing dynamics in which these events take place. APSA and workshop organizers will notify selected workshop fellows of any updates/changes to the date and location of the workshop in September 2020.
How to Apply
Completed applications, including all necessary supporting documents (in PDF or Word format), must be submitted by Saturday, September 5. Selected fellows will be contacted in September 2020. Applications must be in English and include:
• The completed online Application Form.
• A detailed, recent curriculum vitae/resume.
• A research statement (2,000 words maximum) describing the work-in-progress you propose to develop and present at the workshop. This statement should outline the main focus of the paper, the methods used, the data/fieldwork on which it is based, and how it relates to the workshop theme(s).
The research project should not be any part of a co-authored project and should not be an excerpt from a work that is already completed or accepted for publication. Submissions may be derived from an ongoing dissertation project if also suitable for publication as a journal article.
Two letters of reference on official letterhead and scanned as electronic files. If you are a graduate student, one letter should be from your dissertation supervisor. If you are a researcher or faculty member, letters can come from a former dissertation supervisor, a colleague at your home institution, a university official, or an employer. Your letter-writers should preferably send these letters separately to asiaworkshops at apsanet.org<mailto:asiaworkshops at apsanet.org>.

A new batch of opportunities. Best wishes as we start this new semester!
1. Postdoc at UCSD’s Center for Peace and Security Studies
The Center for Peace and Security Studies at UCSD is looking to hire two postdocs on "cyber security, escalation, and international conflict".
Ideal candidates will have:
- extensive knowledge in international relations and the cyber domain
- demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity and equity in academia
- experience with data science and machine learning
Applications will be reviewed starting September 1st and continue until the positions are filled.
The full call is available on our website:

2. Postdoc at UCSD’s Center for Commerce and Diplomacy
The Center for Commercial Diplomacy (CCD) at UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS) invites applications for two postdoctoral scholar employee positions from individuals with a Ph.D. degree or who expect to receive a Ph.D. degree by September 1, 2021, for the 2021-2022 academic year.
These awards are designed to promote high-quality research on the challenges and institutions of international economic diplomacy in a changing world. Research projects that seek to understand the causes and consequences of the institutions of economic globalization (e.g. GATT/WTO, FTAs, BITs, IMF, World Bank, Fast-Track, TPA, RTAA, etc) are particularly welcome. Commercial diplomats operate within a set of domestic and international institutions that governs their behavior in international negotiations. But we know little about the specifics of these rules and procedures, how they came into being, how they vary over time and across countries, and how they affect economic outcomes. Postdoctoral research on the institutions of economic globalization can help answer questions about the welfare and distributional consequences of these institutions and, ultimately, result in the better design of these institutions.
Outstanding scholars anywhere in the world are eligible to apply. The Center invites applications from candidates with a background in economics, political science, economic history, legal history, and other disciplines bearing on the study of economic diplomacy. Selected candidates will be required to be in residence for the duration of the appointment, health conditions permitting, and to interact with faculty and Ph.D students, giving at least one research talk. Selected postdoctoral scholars are also expected to attend CCD events and related seminars, and to post their research on the CCD website.
Applicants are required to hold a Ph.D. by September 1, 2021 in one of the above mentioned disciplines.
To apply, please provide the below by email to Lisa Lee at lisalee at ucsd.edu<mailto:lisalee at ucsd.edu>
1. Cover letter explaining the candidate's scholarly career, prospective or actual doctoral defense date, and academic interests.
2. Current curriculum vitae including publications.
3. One writing sample (limit of 100 pages).
4. Three letters of recommendation sent directly to Lisa Lee at lisalee at ucsd.edu<mailto:lisalee at ucsd.edu>
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, but it is highly recommended that you apply before May 15, 2021 for full consideration.

BITSS Research Transparency and Reproducibility Training (RT2)
Call for Applications
BITSS will hold its next Research Transparency and Reproducibility Training (RT2) online and sessions will take place 8–11:30 am PT (GMT-7) daily.
RT2 provides participants with an overview of tools and practices for transparent and reproducible social science research. The program is developed and delivered by leading academic researchers from across the social sciences and will provide participants with opportunities for collaborative work and skills-building. Participants will be able to exchange feedback and receive support from instructors throughdaily online discussion forums. Following the training, BITSS will also facilitate RT2 “office hours,”where participants will be able to meet individually with instructors and receive guidance on their own research questions and ideas.
A tentative agenda is available here. Sessions will focus on the following topics:
Research ethics and Mertonian norms for transparency and reproducibility
Improved specification through study pre-registration and pre-analysis plans
Hands-on practice with version control using Git (GitHub or the Command Line)
Dynamic documents with R, Python, or Stata
Improved and ethical reproducibility thorough data management, de-identification, and sharing
Appropriate use of statistics and interpretation of statistical evidence.
Faculty
Confirmed faculty include (in alphabetical order): Daniel Benjamin (UCLA), Luiza Cardoso De Andrade (the World Bank), Benjamin Daniels (Georgetown University), Tim Dennis (UCLA), Fernando Hoces de la Guardia (BITSS), Jennifer Sturdy(Millenium Challenge Corporation), Katherine Koziar (UC Riverside), Aleksandr Michuda (UC Davis), Edward Miguel (UC Berkeley and BITSS), Dena Plemmons (UC Riverside), Ben Sprung-Keyser (Harvard), Lars Vilhuber (Cornell University and US Census Bureau), and others.
Eligibility
RT2 is designed for researchers in the social and health sciences, with particular emphasis on economics, political science, psychology, sociology, and public health. Participants are typically (i) current Masters and PhD students, (ii) postdocs, (iii) junior faculty, (iv) research staff, (v) librarians and data stewards, and (vi) journal editors, funders, and research managers curious about the implications of transparency and reproducibility for their work.
RT2 curriculum is most applicable to research that uses quantitative or mixed methods. Applicants should have proficiency in at least one of the following statistical analysis software: R, Python, or Stata.
Participants will be expected to actively participate in all of the sessions. We encourage applicants who will be able to attend and engage in all sessions.
Tuition
Tuition for this RT2 is $300 for participants affiliated with academic and non-profit institutions, and $600 for participants affiliated with for-profit, governmental, and other types of institutions. 5. Postdoc, Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS)
Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). The program will select postdoctoral scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. The number of candidates hired will depend on the qualifications of the overall applicant pools. The postdoctoral appointment will be for one academic year for scholars who have received a Ph.D. at an institution outside the United States and, who at the time of application, do not have a tenure-track faculty appointment. We define sustainability expansively. What does economics teach us about inclusive growth and equality of opportunity? How can countries leverage ecological sciences and engineering to scale energy sources that are sustainable and practical, encourage environmentally sound consumption patterns, promote resource renewal and protect biodiversity? What would sustainable global integration look like? How is understanding the behavior of complex systems crucial to sustainability? How can architecture and engineering build smarter and more sustainable cities? What can countries learn from sociology about supporting family structures and community institutions? How might information science and technology render virtual public spheres civil while keeping them open? How can societies use political science to improve governance, raise political participation, and manage a wide diversity of views that healthy societies must have? Above all, how can countries create and propagate consensus narratives of sustainability that balance interests?
Applicants must apply online at: https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/16742. Applications are due by November 16, 2020 (11:59 p.m. EST).
